Specialty fabrics and features will upgrade the atmosphere, like fabric liners for blackout curtains and thermal drapes. Innovative options and customized rods allow motorized drapes to open and close on command.

The Fabric of Drapes

Choosing the fabrics for your custom drapes can take some planning. You’ll want to create a beautiful look that enhances the style. It’s also important to know which window issues you’d like to solve. These are both reasons that it’s nice to work with a designer–an expert to guide you. Our window covering specialists can advise you about how the fabrics will lay, what type of liners will work best for blackout curtains, and how to coordinate designs when you’re considering pairing drapes with window shades. Come browse through fabric sample books at either of our drapery stores to find looks that inspire you.

Drapery Details

In addition to the drapery fabrics you select, there are two important details to customize curtains for your Austin home. The first is the curtain rods and additional drapery hardware. The other is the header style–otherwise known as how the top of the drapes are finished.

The Hardware

Curtain rods, rings, clips…it can easily become overwhelming. The metallic finishes should coordinate with your home’s design, and the way to properly hang them will depend on the curtain header style you select. Start with the metal finish. Which look do you prefer?

  • Matte Black
  • Gold
  • Oil-rubbed Bronze
  • Natural Brass
  • Brushed Nickel

Once you determine the finish you like, you’ll need the proper hardware to attach the curtains to the rod. The header style you choose will dictate the hardware and accessories. This can include the drapery rod, curtain rings and clips–or hooks. This can also include curtain tiebacks–optional accessories for times when you’d like to drape the curtains out of the way.

Choosing the Header Style

Known as the header style, this describes the way the top of the drapes will be sewn, or finished off. Have you seen a look you like? While there are number of ways to style the top of the draperies, if one style appeals to you, we’d love to see your vision. Let’s consider the top three categories:

  • Pinch Pleated Drapes: This technique “pinches” fabrics together, to sew the folds. Varieties can include more or less folds, or various sizes of folds. The look is customized and elegant. These drapes are normally clipped with rings that hang from the curtain rod.
  • Grommet Drapes: Metal grommets are affixed along the top of the curtain fabric. These round rings feature an open center where the rod can slide through. This is a well-known, and very popular, style that accommodates a range of styles from casual to formal.
  • Ripple Fold Drapes: This type of drapery is attached to a specialty track that allows the fabrics to glide open and closed. The fabrics form consistent, rounded curves all along the top of the window. This type of drapery is similar to the Hunter Douglas Luminette.

Layering Window Draperies with Shades

It’s a style statement at the window, and it has benefits for the atmosphere, as well! Layering drapes with roman shades, rollers or woven shades is a beautiful way to enhance the design of your home. This is a technique that can frame the windows with color, while the base window covering provides much-needed light control, energy efficiency and privacy.
