Window Treatment Options & Styling Tips

No matter how beautifully decorated a space is, there is one factor that will make or break the entire room: Window Treatments. Without the correct window coverings, or any coverings at all, your home is subjected to harsh lighting, lack of privacy, and so many other issues. So, what type of treatments would work best for your home? We’ve created this easy-to-follow guide on window treatment options. Take a look!

Category #1: Soft Window Treatments

Soft treatments are window coverings made from fabrics and soft materials. There are quite a few options in this category—take a look at our 9 different types of window treatments guide for all the details.

The Fabrics

There are three fabrics we focus on for our soft window treatment options:

Sheer: This type of fabric will diffuse the incoming light while still allowing you to see outside. Sheer fabrics are available for horizontal and vertical shades.

Patterns, Solids, and Prints: This style of fabric is a great choice for rooms that need a lot of light blocking and privacy control. We have many design options, so it’s easy to match to your home decor.

Woven: These fabrics consist of wood, cloth, bamboo, or natural fibers. They’re woven together for an earthy, organic look.

All About Opacity

When our designers discuss opacity during in-home consultations, they’re referring to how much light and privacy the shade allows. Each room in a home is unique and might need a different opacity level. Many collections are available with light filtering and room darkening fabrics. We also have collections where there is a percentage scale: 0% refers to the most sheer fabrics and 100% offers the most light blocking.

Operating Features for Soft Treatments

There are a few options for soft coverings: They can roll or stack. They can be unlined or lined. We can add an insulated barrier, or even use a dual shade system. It all depends on what your space needs and how you’d like to control your treatments.

Category #2: Hard Window Treatments

Hard window coverings are structured. These are made out of metal, wood, vinyl, or composite material. Two popular hard window treatment options are shutters and blinds.

The Materials

When looking at hard window treatments, don’t forget to consider the space and its needs. Bathrooms, for example, will need something durable, capable of withstanding the humid settings. Kitchens are a great space for hard treatments, as they are easy to wipe. The finish is just as important, too. Don’t forget to ask your designer about warranties and guarantees against warping and cracking.

Operating Features for Hard Treatments

Hard window coverings are typically operated manually, but there are a few other options, like automatic blinds that offer the motorized tilt of slats. Shutters can feature varying types of opening and closing, from hinged panels to sliders.

Layer Away!

You can really let your personality shine at the window. Layering window treatments with drapery is another great way to show off your personal style.
