Room Darkening VS Blackout Blinds?

What’s the difference between the two? Room darkening fabrics deliver a darkened space with “most” of the light removed. Blackout blinds create a truly dark space–very little light to see in front of you–even during the day. Many of our shade collections are available with room darkening fabrics. We also offer blackout curtains with speciality fabrics to block the light. Our blackout shade systems, including the best blackout cellular shades of LightLock, seal out the light for incredible darkness.

Room Darkening with Dual Shades

The dual shade system means that you can feature the widest range of light control, from light filtering and outdoor views, to room darkening and complete privacy. Two shades share the same headrail; the front is light-filtering, paired with a secondary blackout roller shade. The front shade can be in place for view-through and diffused natural light. The second shade, normally a blackout roller shade, is lowered in place when you want to block out the light.

What Are Light Gaps?

Commonly seen along the side edges of the window, light gaps appear as a sliver of light, even with opaque fabrics designated for blackout shades. Light gaps can add light to the overall space during daytime hours. Many blackout blinds have some type of light gap–this can depend on the type of window shade you choose, as well as the depth of the window frame and how the window coverings have been installed. To cover light gaps, many homeowners add blackout curtains at the side of the windows. To prevent light gaps, channel systems are available to seal out the light.
